The ECDL establishes standards for everyone who uses a computer in either a professional or a personal capacity. It is a certificate that verifies your competence, declares your computer skills, and makes you readily mobile within Irish business and across the Community. European employers and job seekers all agree on the need for this standard definition of practical competence in Information Technology.

ECDL START is a certificate which certifies the passing of any four modules of the ECDL programme. The ECDL Start certificate will list any four completed modules (as specified by the candidate). The certificate clarifies the fact that ECDL Start certifies part-completion of the entire ECDL syllabus by stating “The ECDL Start certificate is awarded to a candidate who has completed four out of a possible seven modules of the ECDL programme. The certificate does not indicate that the candidate has completed the ECDL certificate.”
The cost of a Skills Card includes one ECDL certificate issue. While candidates should be encouraged to complete all modules to receive their full ECDL certificate, it is possible to apply their one certificate issue toward an ECDL Start certificate.
However, candidates who are issued an ECDL Start certificate under this scheme and who later complete the remaining modules toward full ECDL certification will be charged €20 for a full ECDL certificate.
A certificate is awarded by ICS-Skills (Irish comupter Society) on successful completion of the course.

The International Standard of Competence for Computer Users
The European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) is the world’s most successful IT skills certification programme. Almost three million people are participating in the programme today in over 60 countries worldwide. In Ireland, the ECDL is administered by ICS SKILLS.
Outside of Europe the programme is known as the International Computer Driving Licence (ICDL), attesting to its phenomenal world-wide recognition and growth.
The ECDL establishes a standard for everyone who uses a computer in either a professional or personal capacity. It is a certificate that verifies competence in computer use, making the holder readily mobile within Ireland and internationally. Employers and job seekers all agree on the importance of this standard definition of practical competence in Information Technology.
The ECDL consists of 3 main components – a syllabus, a skills card and a question test base, all leading to the European Computer Driving Licence.
The ECDL in Ireland: Impact Study
In 2003 ICS SKILLS and the ECDL-F commissioned an independent report into the impact of the ECDL in the Irish economy. The study is the most comprehensive to date on the impact of the ECDL programme in a national market.
Content and Syllabus:
The ECDL syllabus describes the knowledge and the skills required to achieve the ECDL standard. It covers basic computer skills and the use of common applications in the workplace, the home and in society in general. It is divided into seven modules, 6 practical and 1 theoretical. A test in each module must be passed before the ECDL is awarded.
The 7 ECDL modules are as follows:
The tests in these modules do not have to be taken in any specific order.
When a candidate registers on an ECDL programme, they receive a Skills Card on which their progress through the seven tests is recorded. When all seven modules are completed, the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) is awarded.
Duration:
3 Hours, one evening or morning per week for 16 weeks
A certificate is awarded by ICS-Skills (Irish comupter Society) on successful completion of the course.
