Computer Training Summer Camps for Primary School Pupils
The computer training summer camps for primary school pupils have recently finished at the IT Training Centre, Mountmellick Development Association (MDA), Mountmellick, and have once again been very successful. These training courses covered topics such as: using the computer with care with the implementation of fun-learning and educational programs. During the courses children also learned the basics in word processing, including creating, editing, printing & saving documents, using the internet with care and much more. The children participating on the course had an enjoyable time while learning the fundamentals in computing.
Each child received a certificate of competence on completion of the course, there was also an award for outstanding performer which, was presented to Adrian Donagher aged 13 and Christopher Joyce aged 12.
Imelda Burke, IT Coordinator at MDA delivered the training to this years groups said, “The children were very enthusiastic and contributed greatly to their training, each child gave a hundred percent commitment and their attendance was extremely good. A special word of thanks to Kieva Dunne who helped with the delivery of training and who put in a lot of preparatory work prior to and during the course. Kieva is on work placement from Mountmellick CE Scheme”.
The next training course for children will take place in February 2008.

Vista Boys & XP Girls was the title for this years computer training course.
The midterm computer training course for primary school pupils has recently finished at Mountmellick Development Association (MDA), Mountmellick. This training course covered topics including: using the computer with care with the implementation of fun-learning and educational programs. During the course children learned the basics in word processing, including creating, editing, printing & saving documents. The children participating on the course had an enjoyable time while learning the basics in computing.
Each child received a certificate of competence on completion of the course there was also an award for outstanding performer which, was presented to Hannah Swayne from 4th Class.
Imelda Burke, IT Coordinator at MDA said, “The children were very enthusiastic and contributed greatly to their training. The class tutor was Bernadette Smith, IT Trainer MDA who put in a lot of preparatory work prior to and during the course. A special word of thanks to Cian Hyland who helped with the delivery of training, Cian was on work placement from Mountmellick Community School and also thanks to Charlotte Murphy & Michelle Pigotte who are on work experience here in the MDA from St. Patricks College in Carlow. Charlotte & Michelle also helped with the delivery of training”. The next training course for children will take place in July & August of this year. Software titles such as English, Maths, Irish, Creative Writing, Typing Games and much more were used during each training session. The children participating on the course had an enjoyable time while learning the basics in computing.
Each child received two certificates, a certificate of competence on completion of the course and a certificate for outstanding participation. There was also an award for outstanding performer.

SIXTEEN weeks of training and committed work paid dividends last Friday. ECDL certificates were presented to participants who completed the course in the Information and Technology Training Centre in Mountmellick.
Mountmellick Development Association (MDA) Programme Manager Mary Dolan, presenting the certificates, congratulated the 14 participants and wished them well in the future.
“It takes a bit of bravery to set out and complete this course. ECDL certification is a requirement with many employers today and we are happy to be able to provide ECDL and ECDL advanced training courses here in MDA,” said Ms Dolan.
She also pointed out that the centre had recently invested in new technology. They have installed 12 new networked PCs with full internet and email access. Printing and scanning facilities are also available.
Most recently, they have invested in new software to assist the visually impaired and have also put in a loop system for those hard of hearing.
Bridie Dunne, a member of the Board of Directors, complimented the participants on their achievement, adding that she too had done the course. “I did it myself and even though I couldn’t turn on a computer now I find it so useful,” said Ms Dunne.
Imelda Burke and Miriam Grannell delivered the training courses and Ms Burke said: “Both groups were very enthusiastic and some of these students have since gone on to ECDL advanced courses.”
The centre offers a wide range of computer training to adults, from absolute beginners to advanced levels. Courses are certified by both ECDL and City and Guilds. One-to-one tuition is also available.
MDA uses a partnership approach for programmes such as the Back to Education Initiative, Return to Education and preemployment programmes, which are provide jointly with agencies including FÁS and Laois VEC.

Computer Training for Junior & Senior Infants and 1st & 2nd Class Pupils

Thirty-Six Pupils from Junior & Senior Infants, 1st & 2nd in Laois and Offaly area have recently completed a Six-Week Computer Training Course held in Mountmellick Development Association (MDA) IT Training Centre. The course covered areas including- using a computer with care with the implementation of fun-learning programs, such as, Issues in English, Maths, Irish, Typing, Creative Writing, & Interactive Software Titles. Children also used Word Processing to Input Text & Pictures which also included basic formatting & editing and Desktop Publishing to design & create Cards & Newsletters. When the course concluded the children had created their own newsletters.
The courses were broken up into Six Sessions and were held for two hours a day, one day a week. They commenced in October and finished in November of this year.
Each child received a certificate of competence on completion of the course and twenty-eight of these children received certificates for Good Attendance. There was also an award for outstanding performer in each class.
Imelda Burke, IT Co-ordinator at MDA said, “These children were quiet young but were very enthusiastic, creative and contributed greatly to their training classes. They enjoyed the training immensely and the feed back from both parents & children was very positive”.

Computer Training for Active Retirement Group in Mountmellick

Members of Mountmellick Active Retirement Group completed a beginner’s computer training course recently in the Mountmellick Development Association and were awarded certificates of competence. A total of sixteen members have been attending weekly computer training. The course was funded from National Lottery Funds through the MHB and participants were delighted with the opportunity to learn basic computer skills such as Word Processing, using Internet and E-mail and File Management. “Feed back, verbally and from evaluation questionnaires was very positive,” said Imelda Burke, IT coordinator/trainer with MDA “and the group were very enthusiastic throughout. We hope that we will be able to provide further training.”
The certificates were presented by MDASI programme manager Mary Dolan who said “I was delighted that the group showed a lot of interest in this course and gained so much from it, as it can at first appear very daunting for computer learners.”
Mountmellick Active Retirement Group has a membership in access of 40 people and meet fortnightly in the MDA. The group organise a range of activities for their members including computer, art, drama and yoga classes. The group is affiliated to the Laois County Development Board and members of the group attend the Midland Health Board consultative forum for older people.

First Students in Mountmellick to receive Equal Skills Certification from ECDL

Seven students participating in a Back to Education Initiative (BTEI) in Mountmellick Development Association recently received Equal Skills computer certificates from ECDL.
The Equal Skills programme commenced in the Information and Technology Training Centre in the Mountmellick Development Associations in October 2003 and these students were the first in Mountmellick to receive these certificates.
Equal Skills is a fun, informal and uncomplicated introduction to computers and the Internet, showing the use and role of technology in the everyday lives of all people, regardless of status, education, age, ability or understanding. It has been designed as a flexible learning programme that provides the ultimate introduction to basic computer skills. The programme was developed by ICS-Skills, the organisation responsible for the licensing of The European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) in Ireland.
The Equal Skills programme was one of three modules on the BTEI, which is funded by Department of Education and Science.
Gillian Farrar, ECDL, presented the certificates to the seven at the presentation of certificates, Eric Makim, director of Mountmellick Development Association Social Inclusion Ltd, congratulated the students on their achievements and wished them well in their future studies.

Twenty-Three school-going children from 1st & 2nd Class have recently completed a very successful five- week computer course at the Mountmellick Development Association (MDA), Mountmellick. The course covered topics including: using a computer with care with the implementation of fun-learning programs, designing and creating newsletters & Word Processing. Software titles such as Issues in English, Maths, Irish, Creative Writing, Typing Games and much more were used during each training session. When the course concluded the children had designed and created their own newsletters and these were distributed to some of the schools. The course was broken up into five classes and was held for two hours a week for five weeks. It commenced in February and finished in March of this year.
Each child received a certificate of competence on completion of the course and fifteen of these children received certificates for outstanding participation. There was also an award for outstanding performer in each class.
Imelda Burke, IT co-ordinator at MDA said, “The children were very enthusiastic and contributed greatly to their training. They loved the creative element of the course”.
