What does Food & Health Aim to do?

The Food & Health Programme is aimed at supporting people who are interested in healthier eating.  The course includes a lot of practical cookery as well as sensible suggestions and ideas, particularly where cost is a consideration. Courses take place over 6 sessions each lasting 2˝ hours.

The main goal is to help improve people’s access to good quality information that can be put into practice in everyday life.

This is a community peer-led program, whereby local men and women have been trained as Food and Health instructors.  The Food and Health instructors come from across the counties Laois, Offaly and Kildare.

The project is a joint initiative between the Mountmellick Development Association (MDA), and the Health Service Executive, Dublin Mid Leinster.

Which Course is Best for you?

There are 4 courses available depending on the needs of the group:

(1):Healthy Food Made Easy (HFME)

This course comprises both theory and cookery elements. The Instructor takes the group through the food pyramid chart and discusses balance in their diet, fats, fibre, shopping tips etc. A community Dietician visits the groups on session 5 to answer any extra question that arise.

(2):Cooking for Health (CFH)

This is a simpler version of the HFME and is delivered to people with low literacy skills and people with intellectual and learning disabilities.

(3):Cool Dude

This program is aimed at young people aged between 8 & 14yrs and is both practical and fun. A physical activity module is
included in this programme.

(4):Community Heart Health

The Community Heart Health project is designed for groups who have already completed a Healthy Food Made Easy course and focuses on nutrition, stress management and physical activity.

How much does is cost?

The cost of the Healthy Food Made Easy instructor and community
dietitian will be covered by HSE. Groups in the community availing of the course are asked to make a donation of €200 for Healthy Food Made Easy & Cool Dude, €100 for the Healthy Heart to assist with food and administration costs.
