On the 23rd of July 2011 seven of our New Directions group travelled to Manchester with Audrey O’Reilly & Patricia Cullen.

The start was early and the boat was boring, but the excitement got us through it. We arrive at Holyhead at 11:40. The sun was shining. We arrived in Manchester at 2:15p.m. Firstly, we visited the Museum Of Science and Industry (MOSI) where we got to see how a tornado is formed and the effects of an earthquake. We also saw one of the first computers, it was big. We then visited the Museum of Air and Space which had spitfire jets, old style motorbikes and ejector seats.

Then we travelled to our hotel which was called Hotel Britannia, where we met up with leaders Denise and Frank, accompanying Harry and George from the Billingshurst Partnership Group. We talked about what we accomplished and what we hope to accomplish over the coming months, we also discussed our education systems, how happy we were to meet up again and how disappointed we were of the prospect that we might not see our English friends again.

We had dinner at half seven and by eleven everyone was asleep.

On Sunday we had another early morning and were on the bus for eight and travelled to Alton Towers. When we got there we were more than nervous, especially me. We stayed from early morning until almost five in Alton Towers. By the time we were finished we were wrecked tired.

When we got to Holyhead we went into McDonalds before heading to the docks. We had nearly missed the boat thanks to a computer error and not on our side which was a relief. We all slept on the boat, we were in Dublin at midnight and back in Mountmellick 2am.

This was a great experience and very beneficial to us. We have learned so much and developed from this experience. It is sad that the programme has come to an end. Our evaluation was very positive. All that is left for us to do is to update our New Directions face book page.

Mountmellick Youth Development Centre host young people from Billingshurst
A group of five young people and two leaders from Billingshurst, England recently visited Mountmellick Youth Development Centre (MYDC) as part of a Youth in Democracy programme. The aims of the programme are to provide an opportunity for young people to develop democracy materials for youth groups and exchange cultural identities with one another. The group of young people from Mountmellick had previously visited Billingshurst last October.

The visitors to Mountmellick undertook a Youth Leadership workshop and a workshop on the Importance of Young People Having a Voice with participants of the MYDC who also arranged a visit to the Dáil in Dublin for their guests.

Seventeen year old Tiffany Lawless is chairperson of New Directions, the group that has been set up by members of MYDC to spearhead this venture. “This project is of great interest to us and, so far, we have learnt a great deal by exchanging views and opinion with like-minded people from another country. “

Project leader of MYDC, Audrey O’ Reilly says, “As part of this project, participants of the MYDC have been studying the importance of democracy and social equality amongst young people at local, national and European level. The programme actively encourages young people to become active EU members.”

Mountmellick Youth Development Centre was set up in 1997 to provide educational, social and cultural programmes for young people in Mountmellick.
